Dear VQEG (Video Quality Experts Group) Sorry to bother you with this request but I wonder if you could help us. Robert and I are looking for research specifically about the relative productivity improvement of HD video (and telepresence) over SD video in knowledge-worker environments. We have been looking for this but haven't found any research on the topic. We simply can't believe it isn't there, and wonder if we are not looking in the right places. It seems so obviously important given the sums that enterprises are being asked to spend on HD video, and also because of the potential impact on such broader topics as the environment. I have found very little research on this. I have some research that indicates: a) benefits of HD for specific tasks (telemedicine, HR employee interviews, executive-level discussions, etc). Not applicable to knowledge workers nor a general enterprise business case. Also this material is typically anecdotal rather than quantified. And in some cases there are contradictory anecdotes. b) benefits of non-verbal visual queues in general. Dubious applicability anywhere other than a laboratory setting. Dubious methodology. Not relevant to enterprise workers. c) benefits of HD vs SD in eLearning. Benefit of HD video was not substantiated. Student motivation was the determining variable, not picture quality. Fairly solid methodology. d) benefits of HD in "first encounters". Still waiting for details on methodology, but it looks like first impressions are better with HD. Not applicable in most knowledge worker scenarios, but applicable to many of the specific task cases in item "a" above. I am hoping that you could provide some references or suggestions for others to ask. Gartner is not aligned with any vendors and is considered an independent source for technology reference.
